Course Details

The first century of Islam, 7th century CE, witnessed the creative, complex and controversial  formation of a distinct Muslim lifestyle, architectural aesthetic and most impressively, the birth of an empire. Who were the mighty Umayyads, elevating the early Muslim polity to dizzying heights of power, whilst also earning deeply rooted resentment during their short-lived, yet immensely eventful lifespan?

Join us on a four-week series to uncover the criminally neglected inaugurating  era of ‘Islamicate’ history of the Umayyad dynasty, unfurling the good, the bad and the utterly despicable.

Despite the extreme brevity of the course, the contents will be jam-packed with not only military and political phenomena, but also social projects, government policies, regional tensions and fiscal changes, all of which contributed greatly to the rise and demise of the Umayyads.

Note: This is an on-demand course, where you will be given access to the course recordings and material to review in your own time. This will be sent approximately 24 – 48 hours from registration.
