An Introduction to the Science of Ḍabṭ

Summary:

In order to facilitate the correct recitation of the Qur’an, scholars developed diacritics for letters. This short course will cover the history of the development of the Arabic script as well as the major differences between the two main conventions of Ḍabṭ, the Eastern and the Western (Spain and North Africa) conventions.

Learning Objectives:
  • Students will identify the key components in the introduction and development of Arabic writing, including the science of Ḍabṭ and the differences between Rasm and Ḍabṭ.
  • Students will explore the two famous conventions and the specific rules governing the Ḍabṭ of individual letters, Tanwīn, and Nūn Sākinah, as well as when to place Sukūn.
  • Additionally, students will learn about the Ḍabṭ of omitted letters, Ikhtilās, Ishmām, and Imālah, enhancing their understanding of Arabic orthography.

Course Details

In this concise two-day course on Arabic writing, students will identify the essential components of the introduction and development of the script, focusing on the science of Ḍabṭ and the distinctions between Rasm and Ḍabṭ. Participants will explore the two renowned conventions and delve into the specific rules related to Ḍabṭ. Both sessions are necessary to grasp the intricacies of Arabic orthography and complete the text.

Student are encouraged to attend all sessions live, however, recordings will be available to those who register inshāʾAllāh

Ustadha Saima Yacoob

Ustadha Saaima Yacoob is the founder and director of Recite With Love. She holds multiple ijāzāt in Tajwīd and the canonical recitations of the Qurʾān as well as a Master’s in Education with a focus on Curriculum and Development. She has been teaching Qurʾān full time for more than a decade, Alhamdulillah, and has experience teaching multiple age groups. Her teachers include, Shaykh Hatim Yousseff, Shaykh Hussain Ashraq Laban, Shaykh Abdullah Abu Mahfouz, and the late Mufti Mohamed-Umer Esmail (May Allah have mercy on him). She has permission to teach as well as to grant ijazah to others through her teachers.
Her greatest passion is to inspire others to recite the Qurʾān with Tajwīd, and to develop future certified teachers of Qurʾān. It is her hope that she continues to benefit from her teachers, and is accepted by Allah Ta’ala to be a source of benefit for the ummah of His beloved Prophet (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).
