Duʿā – The power of a believer

  1. “أَللَّهم اسْتَعمِلنِي فِي طَاعَتِك”
“Oh Allāh, use my energy in doing good deeds.”

In regards to this duʿā, a person asked Imām Abū Hanifah رحمه الله, “How did you reach to such a high rank?” Imām Abū Hanifah رحمه الله said that his ustādh told him of a duʿā (the above duʿā) and since Imām Abū Hanifah رحمه الله was young, he never missed out on praying the duʿā. (Imām Abū Hanifah رحمه الله always prayed that du’a after his fardh salah)

Muftī Taqī Sāhib has said that we should make du’a to Allāh ﷻ, when alone, and make a habit to talk to Allāh ﷻ, ask from Allāh ﷻ and call out to Allāh ﷻ when alone.

We should make duʿā at all times – whilst sitting, standing and even whilst walking as we never know when our duʿās will be accepted.

In regards to the times when duʿās are accepted: They are accepted quickly after every Farḍ Ṣalāh and at the time of Tahajjud. If one finds it difficult to wake up for Tahajjud, then even whilst lying in bed we should try to make duʿā to Allāh ﷻ, pray, hope and ask Allāh ﷻ to accept our duʿās during the time of acceptance.

Allāh ﷻ, at the time of Tahajjud, calls out and asks, “Is there anyone who is asking of anything from Me? Is there anyone who seeks My forgiveness?”

Tahajjud is our golden chance for our duʿās to be accepted.

If Allāh ﷻ accepts our duʿās during the times when duʿās are accepted, we would be so fortunate and the acceptance of our duʿās could be a means of success for us.

The condition for duʿās to be accepted is to pray them attentively with concentration.

May Allāh ﷻ accept all our jā’iz duʿās and grant us goodness in both worlds, āmīn.

[Above notes taken during a Bukhārī Dars with Sheikhul Ḥadīth Ḥaḍrat Muftī Ibrāhīm Rāja Saheb.]

Duʿās are not just words, a du’ā is a feeling and an emotion.
– Mawlāna Abdul-Jawād

In order for our duʿās to be answered, it is necessary that one appears before Allāh ﷻ as weak, helpless and simply unable to hold on his own, modest and humble and submits to Allāh ﷻ with total negation of what is supposed to be pride, dignity, honour, ego and then makes duʿā.

Duʿā is a thing of the soul which requires that its words match the feebleness and humbleness of the soul of the maker of that duʿā.

Allāh ﷻ is All-Hearing (السميع), All-Knowing (العليم). Allāh ﷻ knows what we show on the outside and what we hide on the inside. Allāh ﷻ hears everything said quietly or loudly.

Therefore, when the voice of the Companions رضي الله عنهم reached a loud pitch during du’ā made on the occasion of the Battle of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “You are not calling someone dead or absent that you say it in such a loud voice. Instead, your addressee is someone Hearing and Near, that is Allāh ﷻ (so, to raise your voice is redundant).

Allāh ﷻ has mentioned the du’ā of a righteous person in these words, “When he called his Lord, calling in a lowered voice..” (19:3). – The state of du’ā liked by Allāh ﷻ is that it be asked of Him in a lowered and subdued voice.

Supplicate to Allāh ﷻ with an earnest heart. Supplications and prayers are not lip service. Du’ā refers to asking and begging with full concentration and devotion. Spare a moment from your daily 24 hour activities and then wholeheartedly pray to Allāh ﷻ with full conviction of your du’ā being accepted by Allāh ﷻ. What can’t a du’ā do? Du’ā is a miracle which can achieve the unachievable!
