Introduction to the Science of Rasm

Summary:

The science of Rasm al-Khatt is a study of and a preservation of the unique orthography of the Qur’an. In this course, we will briefly explore the history of the writing of the Qur’an, what are some of the ways in which the orthography of the Qur’an differs from Arabic spelling convention, and what are some of the possible reasons for this.

Course Details

As we read the Qur’an, we come across words that are written differently than the normal Arabic spelling convention. The science of Rasm al-Khatt is a study of and a preservation of the unique orthography of the Qur’an. In this course, we will briefly explore the history of the writing of the Qur’an, what are some of the ways in which the orthography of the Qur’an differs from Arabic spelling convention, and what are some of the possible reasons for this. While this webinar will not be a complete study of Mufti Mohamed-Umer Esmail’s (RA) Tashil al-Rusum, it will be one of the main resources that students will be referring to. Course participants will be provided with a pdf of this work, in sha Allah.

Ustadha Saima Yacoob

Ustadha Saaima Yacoob is the founder and director of Recite With Love. She holds multiple ij膩z膩t in Tajw墨d and the canonical recitations of the Qur示膩n as well as a Master鈥檚 in Education with a focus on Curriculum and Development. She has been teaching Qur示膩n full time for more than a decade, Alhamdulillah, and has experience teaching multiple age groups. Her teachers include, Shaykh Hatim Yousseff, Shaykh Hussain Ashraq Laban, Shaykh Abdullah Abu Mahfouz, and the late Mufti Mohamed-Umer Esmail (May Allah have mercy on him). She has permission to teach as well as to grant ijazah to others through her teachers.
Her greatest passion is to inspire others to recite the Qur示膩n with Tajw墨d, and to develop future certified teachers of Qur示膩n. It is her hope that she continues to benefit from her teachers, and is accepted by Allah Ta鈥檃la to be a source of benefit for the ummah of His beloved Prophet (May Allah鈥檚 peace and blessings be upon him).
